Broadleaved evergreen trees make up the most aboveground forest biomass but are not the most abundant on Earth 🌳 Comparing the distribution of leaf types with their biomass offers valuable insights into varying forests' carbon storage capacity: doi.org/10.1038/s41477…

Arthur Provost modelled #forestfire danger across canton #Bern and quantified variable influence to provide management guidelines. The map indicates how the predicted fire susceptibility is responding to human activities and environmental conditions across the landscape. #wsl

Nice to see our new paper out, an effort by several labs, and led by Nina van Tiel. Global analysis of forest compositional structure and climate change impacts on tree species.

Why are there many evergreen and deciduous forests, but few mixed ones? Yibiao Zou discovered an interesting mechanism behind it. Read the paper: nature.com/articles/s4146… Crowther Lab WSL Dynamic Macroecology

Why do some forests go evergreen while others lose their leaves in winter? We show evidence that these forest types present alternative stable states across temperate regions. Led by our brilliant PhD student Yibiao Zou. Thanks to all the coauthors for making this study possible!

Zou et al. combine forest biodiversity observations & simulations to show that leaf types across northern hemisphere temperate regions follow a bimodal distribution. Yibiao Zou Thomas Crowther Constantin Zohner Crowther Lab D-USYS@ETH nature.com/articles/s4146…
