Of the 140+ school libraries that #HISD has closed, 130 have student populations that are at least 90% economically disadvantaged. Many of these students lack books, tech, & wifi at home. TX: School libraries are good for our state, and all students deserve them. #literacymatters

As one of the country's largest school districts, #HISD deserved this highly professional team to support its 250+ libraries. Now 140+ libraries (serving 94% econ. disadvantaged students) are gone, wi/more to come, & Library Services eliminated. TX: this hurts our state. #txlege

HoustonISD has now closed 159 school libraries, most in low-income areas that need books/tech most. It has removed 2 million+ library books from circulation & wasted $10.5 million in taxpayer funds the previous superintendent had used to upgrade those library collections. TX: ??

At the library at age 11 he learned about physics & vowed to study it in college; his parents' schooling had ended at 8th grade. #HISD has now closed 165 libraries that provided tech, digital materials, wifi, research help, books, study space, more. TX: this harms our students.

Question: If school libraries don't help students, why do most of the wealthier HISD schools have - & value - them? If they do help students, shouldn't kids living in/near poverty have them too? Many lack tech, wifi, study space, research help, & books (digital & print) at home.

In Houston ISD, 108 elementary schools, 31 middle schools, & 26 high schools now have no functioning libraries. Most are in high-poverty areas, & most of the more affluent neighborhoods still have libraries. TX: School libraries help students succeed. All students deserve them.

School libraries provide inspiration & sanctuary as well as many digital & physical resources. After being taken over by the state, Houston ISD has cut libraries from 166 schools, almost all serving high-poverty students. TX: This harms our students, our businesses, our state.
