Cells are fast and crowded places. Numbers help us make sense of them. Here are five of my favorite "bionumbers." 1. ATP synthase spins 134 times/second. That is much faster than the propeller on most piston airplanes, and about half the r.p.m. of a Boeing 737 jet engine.

Nice feature article just out in nature with focus on our lab's condensate tech (optoDrop, Corelet) & its application in finding treatments for disease. Thrilling to see our spinout Nereid Therapeutics & other companies moving toward the clinic! nature.com/articles/d4158…

How did we lose our tail? A simple question.. but it wasn't really asked before! We discovered a plausible scenario for the genetic mechanism that led to tail loss. Amazing that such a big change may have been caused by such a small genetic event. nature.com/articles/s4158… Bo Xia

⚠️New preprint alert✨ biorxiv.org/content/10.110… Condensate's function relies on how well it can retain a biomolecule, which is governed by diffusion. However, intra-condensate diffusion remains largely unknown, especially for RNA in RNP condensates. Here, we used full-length

From Texas to Maine, today’s #SolarEclipse2024 passed through 15 states. Here in Ann Arbor, we were lucky enough to experience 99% coverage from @umich’s Central Campus. Here’s a quick timelapse and composite taken from outside of the Michigan Union today.

Wonderful to see Christopher Azaldegui and Y Hoang's experimental framework to assess biomolecular condensates in bacteria with quantitative microscopy, #superresolution imaging, and cell biology out in Nature Communications today. Anthony Vecchiarelli, it's been a wild ride! rdcu.be/dELa6

It was a lot of fun convening the in-depth symposium « Decoding bacterial behavior and physiology using AI » yesterday. I will be presenting my research at 2:45pm room B303 today. Come see how we can spatially control many kinds of compartments inside bacteria! #ASMicrobe2024

It was such a pleasure convening a bacterial/archaeal cell biology session at #ASMMicrobe featuring incredible talks on bacterial/phage vesicles, carboxysome trafficking, and archaeal decision-making by The Pi Lab Emily Armbruster Y Hoang and priyanka - mind-blowing work!🤯
