We can see you! The camp being set up on Fimbul Ice Shelf, with 63 km long #iceberg D33A next to the northeastern ice front. #Sentinel2 image 11-12-23 Hot Water on Ice British Antarctic Survey 🐧 Norsk Polarinstitutt // Norwegian Polar Institute Icefin Oceans & Sea Ice NPI Prof. Elin Darelius
On the other side of the continent to Hot Water on Ice Norsk Polarinstitutt // Norwegian Polar Institute Icefin Oceans & Sea Ice NPI Prof. Elin Darelius the SWAIS2C team are also preparing to hot water drill through the ice shelf to access the ocean and seabed beneath.
Good progress here on #Fimbul Ice Shelf! ✅ drill assembled ✅ heaters started ✅ flubber filling in process! British Antarctic Survey 🐧 Oceans & Sea Ice NPI Norsk Polarinstitutt // Norwegian Polar Institute Icefin Prof. Elin Darelius
We drilled a hole! After a full drill shake down followed by finding and fixing a few leaks, we made our first borehole down to the depth of the sub-ice cavity at 42 m British Antarctic Survey 🐧 Norsk Polarinstitutt // Norwegian Polar Institute Oceans & Sea Ice NPI Icefin Prof. Elin Darelius
The borehole is open! 231.5 m of ice with 400 m of ocean beneath. We’ve been busy sampling all day, and soon we’ll be deploying the mooring that should observe the ocean for the next 10 years British Antarctic Survey 🐧 Oceans & Sea Ice NPI Icefin Norsk Polarinstitutt // Norwegian Polar Institute
Borehole complete! 16 hours of drilling, 32 hours of science and 30 instruments deployed beneath the ice shelf. Some bigger than others…. Success all around and now a day off before starting our move to our second site British Antarctic Survey 🐧 Norsk Polarinstitutt // Norwegian Polar Institute Oceans & Sea Ice NPI Icefin
MILESTONE! We have just deployed the first mooring here beneath the #Fimbulisen Ice Shelf that shall observe the ocean for the next 10 years! #Antarctica #TrollObservingNetwork @oceanseaicenpi Bjerknessenteret British Antarctic Survey 🐧 Hot Water on Ice 📷Frances Bryson
There is never really a “day off” in Antarctica! Gale force winds are forecasted for Friday, so it was all hands to secure the tents! 💨⛺️ British Antarctic Survey 🐧 Norsk Polarinstitutt // Norwegian Polar Institute Oceans & Sea Ice NPI Icefin Prof. Elin Darelius
It’s a bit windy here on Fimbul Ice Shelf, #Antarctica. 30 knot winds are forecast for tomorrow, and the wind tails are already getting big. Hopefully we won’t have too much digging to do! British Antarctic Survey 🐧 Norsk Polarinstitutt // Norwegian Polar Institute Oceans & Sea Ice NPI Icefin Prof. Elin Darelius
Busy few days here on #Fimbul Ice shelf ✔️ Finished work at the first drill site ✔️Celebrated Christmas ✔️Moved to our second drill site ✔️Setup camp again and now sitting out a storm Should be able to work again on Thursday British Antarctic Survey 🐧 Norsk Polarinstitutt // Norwegian Polar Institute Oceans & Sea Ice NPI
The #weather has finally cleared and we were able to get on with the drill setup at our second site. Fingers crossed the weather holds as we have another two holes to drill here British Antarctic Survey 🐧 Norsk Polarinstitutt // Norwegian Polar Institute Oceans & Sea Ice NPI Icefin Prof. Elin Darelius
Drilling is due to start tomorrow, but first we need to melt 10 tonnes of snow (10,000 L of water). Usually this gets done by hand, but this year we have machinery to help 🎉 British Antarctic Survey 🐧 Norsk Polarinstitutt // Norwegian Polar Institute Oceans & Sea Ice NPI Icefin Prof. Elin Darelius
And that’s a wrap! After 5 days of science and two separate boreholes we have finished our scientific programme for this season. It has been hugely successful, and now we start the process of packing the kit down British Antarctic Survey 🐧 Norsk Polarinstitutt // Norwegian Polar Institute Oceans & Sea Ice NPI Icefin Prof. Elin Darelius
Success at the Fimbulisen Ice Shelf expedition in #Antarctica! After 5 days of scientific work, two separate boreholes, we've finished our scientific programme. Now we are packing down. 📷Tore Hattermann, Norwegian Polar Institute Oceans & Sea Ice NPI Hot Water on Ice Bjerknessenteret
The timeseries continues! After finishing the scientific work at location M2, we went back to M1 to ensure that the instruments work. Great news! The M1 mooring is already delivering data! 📷Tore Hattermann, Norwegian Polar Institute Oceans & Sea Ice NPI Hot Water on Ice Bjerknessenteret
We’re on our way back to Troll! The mooring tower was raised this morning and then we hit the road. Approx. 6 days back to Troll excluding weather delays British Antarctic Survey 🐧 Oceans & Sea Ice NPI Norsk Polarinstitutt // Norwegian Polar Institute Icefin Prof. Elin Darelius
Mission completed! 50 days of remote field work and 50+ instruments installed by the Hot Water on Ice drilling crew in the ocean cavity below #Fimbulisen #TrollObservingNetwork when Norsk Polarinstitutt // Norwegian Polar Institute, Bjerknessenteret, British Antarctic Survey 🐧, Cornell University and CNRS 🌍 teamed up!
