Independent learners are learners who have: 👍declarative knowledge - know that 👍procedural knowledge - know how 👍confidence in both They are then able to see when they are going off track. Independence is not just having the opportunity to "do it on their own".

Giving pupils choice on 'what they learn' and/or 'how to learn it' is like asking a patient to diagnose their own ailment. Pupils are novices. This is why Ts need to understand the difference between novices & experts & how to support pupils effectively to be one more expert.

Demonstrating a new skill while explaining at the same time overwhelms children’s working memory. Try silent modeling, not too fast, then ask ‘What did I just do? Tell your learning partner.’ Impact: more focused, greater understanding, less anxiety, leads to success criteria.

Worst ways to coconstruct success criteria: What makes a good poster/tourist leaflet/balanced argument etc? How can we improve this poor example of a …. ? Children need examples of good ones to identify s/c and start to get a nose for quality

If I never ever see another PowerPoint that my kid and 3 other kids slapped together thru google searches, which the school calls "student-centered, project based learning" -- it will be too soon. What do we get with this? Low info, likely inaccurate, not fact checked or edited

At a recent info session, our parents got a taste of how addition & subtraction are being taught in #elementary. Together with #math coach Leanne Thurlow, they learned about the different strategies we use, & how they can help their child at home. #StamfordAmerican #CognitaWay

Dive into the world of #HumanRights with our 4th graders! In their current Unit of Inquiry, they're exploring what it means to have a 'right', as they participate in group discussions & using the Frayer Model to deepen their understanding. #StamfordAmerican #CognitaWay

Teachers wanted a clear picture of what active learning looks. The result: A framework applicable to any grade/content, filled with high impact effect sizes while allowing for innovation, creativity & teacher autonomy. But the main thing: It's about learning.

Our programme of inquiry is structured to scaffold students' cognitive processes. Units go from surface to deep. Knowledge acquisition --> conceptual understanding --> application/transfer. Watch the International Baccalaureate session on how/why we did this here cdn.muse.ai/u/mDV7Go4/245e…

The need for automaticity on low-level skills is obvious to anyone with experience learning a sport or instrument. So why is there sometimes resistance in education? It makes sense if you think about what people usually find persuasive.

One of the most amusing errors in teaching is asking students to perform activities that leverage a non-existent knowledge base. Students can't have productive discussion if they have no idea what they're talking about. At best, you're training them how to bluff a job interview.
