c1/2 of Oxf biology undergrads can't name 1 Brit butterfly. Yet the @Collins New Nat recent titles on bees and shieldbugs primarily uses scientific nomenclature. We're facing the 6th Extinction. A blog asking who the books are for & what roles they play? markcocker.com/blog/

Something is going very, very wrong with woodland ride management by Forestry England in East Kent. The last few days have seen miles of rides full of flowers in FC owned blocks of Orlestone Forest SSSI shorn down to billiard table length like this.

The size difference between Great White Egret and Little Egret easy to see here. And perhaps also relative intelligence: while the GWEs squabble among themselves the LEs are eating all the fish.

A perfect tribute to the man and to his unrivalled long-term study of Buzzards near Bristol. As shown on the right the 19 territories in 1988 had increased to 92 by 2007 (and 120 by 2020). Robin knew them all as individuals and…

I’m seeing a lot of anger and disappointment in badger circles today that the badger cull is ending, but not ending fast enough. Apologies for the long thread 🧵, but tet me explain why I think the news is the best it could be 1/25

If conservationists can opt out of parts of the Wildlife & Countryside Act that don’t suit them, and laugh about it, then why shouldn’t gamekeepers do exactly the same thing? This is important, hard-won legislation. Ignore it if you wish. But expect others to do the same.

Agree with the post below entirely & amazed that some responding to it see this as a 'moral' issue that justifies law-breaking. These controls are not just bureaucracy for the sake of bureaucracy as some seem to think 1/6

No they wouldn’t. Conservationists in NZ would look at the science. They would realise that changes to habitat and climate are to blame here. And they would not waste money enriching captive breeding practitioners, because they don’t believe in magic. This is hopelessly naive.
