There’s a new Institute for Gov paper out on the £££ savings Hunt & Sunak will need to make

Which could be 2010 austerity levels.

Only repeating that now will be a lot, lot harder

NEW REPORT: with cuts to public services likely, we looked at what the Sunak govt can learn from austerity in the 2010s

Tl;dr - public services are in a much worse position now. Delivering cuts the same way will be more damaging and harder to deliver🧵

Big new job for Rishi Sunak (good luck) and good he isn't 'daunted' - but its a big step from any job to PM and others have found the transition hard even when its just a move from No.11 - me for Institute for Gov instituteforgovernment.org.uk/blog/rishi-sun…

Our new Institute for Gov @CIPFA report shows that cutting now will be much harder than in the 2010s.

If £35bn was all from day-to-day spending, would be 2010-levels of cuts. Even only £20bn from day-to-day is tighter than the 2015 SR

I spoke to BBC News (UK) earlier about our new Institute for Gov @CIPFA report on a possible new period of 'austerity' for public services. Cutting spending now will be much harder than in 2010.

🚨[NEW REPORT] Institute for Gov and @CIPFA analysis shows that finding an estimated £40bn of 'departmental savings' will be more damaging and harder to find than the coalition government's austerity plan instituteforgovernment.org.uk/publications/a…🧵

NEW REPORT: Sunak and Hunt should be wary of resorting to the 'austerity' approach of the 2010s to close the 'fiscal hole' as public services are now more fragile, meaning cuts will be damaging and harder to deliver

Between them, Johnson, Truss & Sunak have made 54 cabinet appointments in 2022... so far.

That's more than twice the previous high in 2010. The highest peaks usually follow elections, especially with a change in governing party. Though a non-election year, 2022 outdoes them all!

A good thing, says Institute for Gov, but...

Our new report warns that finding £40bn savings would be even harder - & more damaging to public services - than the coalition cuts of 2010.

And that Jeremy Hunt should not rush into a new austerity programme
