Fascinating world of ancient #glass: an amazing #Roman glass jug with a smaller glass jug inside – a so-called joke-jar that shows the skill of the glassmaker. Probably made in workshop in Cologne, found in burial in Stein am Rhein, #Switzerland, 4th c. AD. 1/2

The ancients generally agreed that dogs should be given two-syllable names for maximum clarity when issuing commands. Xenophon (4th century BC) gives a long list of his favourites – which of these can you imagine shouting in the park? Actis (Sunshine) Alce (Strength) Bia (Force)

A cat lurking on the counter of an ancient #Roman fast-food shop (a thermopolium) in #Pompeii - sadly for our feline friend, the food once sold there is long gone! #InternationalCatDay

A beautiful #Roman glass bowl, with stripes in very vivid colours including blues, greens, & yellows. It was found in the Vesuvian area around #Pompeii, having been covered in the AD 79 eruption; it was made some 2000+ years ago, & looks absolutely amazing today! #Archaeology

Sipping my coffee β˜•οΈ and thinking about these marvellous Minoan cups! They look so modern it’s incredible to think they were created by Bronze Age potters some 3,800 years ago! This type of Minoan pottery is known as Kamares Ware. Kamares Ware vessels are said to have been used

A #Roman #glass flask in the shape of a #fish. We don't know what flasks in the shape fishes were used for. Maybe the shape relates to the content (garum/fish sauce),maybe they were used to hold oil. On display at Pierides Museum, Larnaka, Cyprus. Photo: Jeff Amadon via Flickr

A #Roman glass flask, decorated with 'snake threads' trailing around it. It was made in the Rhineland about 1700-1800 years ago & ended up being placed in a tomb - one of the reasons it survives in such beautiful condition #Archaeology #RomanArchaeology #AncientGlass

Lovely ancient cups made by highly-skilled Minoan potters some 3,800 years ago! Some cups have such delicately thin walls they are known as β€˜eggshell’ ware. During the Bronze Age, these luxury ceramics were in demand outside Crete. I think they’d be popular in today’s world
