Glad to be in Tonga for #PIFLM53 to reaffirm IOM's commitment to support climate resilience, disaster preparedness, and labor mobility in the Pacific.

Yesterday, I visited two Tongan communities IOM assisted in the wake of the 2022 tsunami. The earthquake at #PIFLM53 on Monday was a stark reminder of the ongoing need for robust early warning systems.

Together with Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade 🇦🇺, we are enhancing Pacific resilience and wellbeing.  The AUD 8 million support announced today will ensure the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility scheme better supports workers and their families.

Climate change & disasters have lasting impacts on the Pacific Islands & beyond. Last year, leaders from the region endorsed a framework to meet the climate challenge. At #PIFLM53, we reaffirm our commitment to Pacific Island nations as they show the world how to make change.

IOM shares COP29 Azerbaijan President's commitment to expanding support for climate adaptation.   Together, we are advocating for solidarity with people most vulnerable to climate displacement.

Important meeting w/ ICMP Director-General Kathryne Bomberger on the Intl Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearance. Raising awareness on this tragic issue affecting people on the move, finding solutions, and supporting families seeking justice are central to our joint efforts.

The impacts of climate change are happening now, threatening lives and displacing millions globally. We can no longer ignore the urgent need for solutions for those who have to move, those already on the move, and those striving to stay and adapt. We need #ClimateAction now.

Echoing Pope Francis on the need for the expansion of safe migration pathways to ensure that the lives of those displaced, fleeing conflict, violence and famine can be protected during their migration journey. ➡️ fides.org/en/news/75342

We are devastated by the deaths of 12 more people in the English Channel, where this year alone, 42 migrants including 11 children, have already died. More safe and regular pathways, as well as solutions to the root issues driving people to leave their home, are urgently needed.

The UK is a key partner for IOM. I had a great meeting with Minister for Development Anneliese Dodds to discuss solutions to some of the largest displacement crises worldwide, including those caused by climate change.
