The latest #drought24 map released this AM shows Abnormal Dryness (D0) expanding in western/northern #IA. D0 is not drought, but a reflection of short-term precip. deficits. Aug. has been particularly dry in these areas. There is widespread rain potential over the next 24 hours.

White mold in alfalfa is a real rotter. Prevent disease by planting alfalfa in spring or early summer where white mold is an issue. Where did the yield come from this year? The average number of rows around the ears was identical to 2023, but each ear had approximately 5 more kernels in length. This translates to each ear being ~0.6 inch longer in 2024 compared to 2023 (on average).

Scouting is the best practice to manage grain affected by ear rots & mycotoxins. 🌽Before harvest, scout across a field & pull husks back to see the entire ear. 🌽If >10% are moldy, the field should be scheduled for early harvest. 🌽In general, ear rot fungi will grow &
