I've just come across a phenomenal history book that makes the Red (and Lavender (!!!)) Scare accessible to kids (10-14) with primary sources and thoughtful interpretations: Andrea Balis and Elizabeth Levy's 'Witch Hunt: The Cold War, Joe McCarthy, and the Red Scare' (2024)
