Good to see this fresh treatment of James Stephen’s pioneering 1803 biography of Toussaint. In a series of articles in 1818, published in French translation as Europe Chastised, Africa Avenged, JS compared the Haitian Revolution to the Hebrew Exodus, making Toussaint a new Moses.
