Yesterday, 20 tenured professors told me why they left academia for industry. Here's what they said: 1. "I was on the tenure track and it broke me. I lost my identity and confidence."

Like owner, like woodworm: "In some cases, the cost of exterminating the pests exceeds the value... of the paintings." ...or society. STILL loving this article weeks later... bbc.com/news/world-eur…

Squadron Leader Rex briefs the fighter pilots of 'Hornet Squadron' before they fly to France. From 'Piece of Cake' (LWT, 1988) and one of Tim Woodward's finest moments playing Rex. Followed by a suitable flypast of Spitfires. RIP Tim Woodward (1953-2023). Thoughts with family

For those who like a bit of retro film, may I recommend my friend (and former colleague) Alison Strauss' report on the excellent sounding Silent Film Fest? Enjoy! hippfest.wordpress.com/2023/10/23/hap…

Of course all of this is built on the insight - learned in 1917 and again in 1941 - that when the United States decides to go isolationist and disengage and let the other major powers do what they want abroad, we end up getting dragged in later anyway and at greater cost. 13/

Here's an interesting article about the restoration of the Southern Cross, which also had an unexpected landing Harbour Grace due to dense fog. More info on the Conception Bay Museum, Harbour Grace website: conceptionbaymuseum.com/2020/06/03/the…

Arrived last week, both Matthew Willis’s magnum opus on the Focke Wulf Fw 200, and Paul Beaver @ Beaver Westminster’s book on Capt Eric Brown. As well as the books overlapping, their authors do too! Great reading in both so far.

HIGHLY recommend Matthew Willis's Fw 200 book from mortonsbooks on the Condor's war use, and pre-war story. Not expensive, and a tight (but better than Twitter-length) answer to this Q.

Io Saturnalia! I cooked some Ancient Roman recipes for us and two friends so that we could celebrate Saturnalia with a mini feast. Lots of wonderfully strange and alien flavour combinations packed with the ever-present asafoetida and fish sauce. We had: 🧵

I borrowed this book from the VaughanEvansLibrary for a quick summer read. It's a good brief overview that's well illustrated from the Qantas heritage collection.

My obituary for Geoff Goodall, 1947-2024, on Vintage Aviation News. Sad to report the loss of aviation fact compiler and raconteur, lovely gent, friend, and someone who laid a solid foundation for those of us keeping tabs on surviving historic aircraft. vintageaviationnews.com/warbirds-news/…
