This is a VERY important study (free to read). Authors find Christian nationalist statements by US Senators predict instances of actual physical violence by self-professed Christians against religious minorities in their state. Holds w/numerous controls & robustness checks. 1/2

Israel's Haaretz newspaper demands foreign journalists be allowed into Gaza, arguing there's no excuse for keeping them out. It says Israel wants what's happening there hidden from view. How strange we never hear western news outlets demand the same. haaretz.com/opinion/editor…

“I wish that my son, Aiden Clark, was killed by a 60-year-old white man. I bet you never thought anyone would say something so blunt, but if that guy killed my 11-year-old son, the incessant group of hate-spewing people would leave us alone." springfieldnewssun.com/news/aiden-cla…

Haitians in Springfield, Ohio, are keeping their children home and reporting damage to their property as anti-immigrant conspiracy theories spread, fanned by statements by Trump and Vance haitiantimes.com/2024/09/11/hai…

Trump is hanging out with racist conspiracy theorists, championing racist tropes about Haitians eating pets AND launching a crypto currency 2 months before the election? Time for journalists interested in portraying factual reality to stop describing this as close to normal.

Icymi, my new piece VANITY FAIR on the strange and troubling mashup of the Catholic right, celebrity influencers and reactionary online culture.

in the last 24 hours alone, the Arizona Republican Party’s official Twitter account has shared nearly 100 posts about Haitians eating cats and dogs, another 100+ posts referencing the Great Replacement and other various racist commentary about migrants in Springfield, Ohio.

JD Vance acknowledges the cat and dog stories are urban legends and then rationalizes it (via CNN): “If I have to create stories so that the American media actually pays attention to the suffering of the American people, then that's what I'm going to do."

One thing that's remarkable about this heartbreaking ProPublica investigation is how much work it took to confirm that this death was the result of an abortion ban. How many more deaths are happening that we haven't been able to confirm?

The NYPD spent $150 Million *extra* last year to catch people who weren't able to afford to pay the subway fare. They owed just $104,000. $150 million could buy free fares (at going rate) for 95,000 poor New Yorkers per year. Instead four people shot, including an officer.

This is where we are: the editor-in-chief of "America's premier destination for conservative analysis" just used the n-word on air to describe Haitian migrants. And Megyn Kelly just ignores it.

New video has emerged of NYPD cops brutally beating a man working at a homeless shelter. The cops didn’t have a warrant to enter the facility, and the workers’ boss told him not to let them in. So they attacked him. Trigger warning for the video.

A former Memphis police officer testified Tuesday that he punched a "helpless" Tyre Nichols at least five times while two colleagues held his arms and said "hit him," then lied to his supervisor about their use of force in a beating that proved fatal. cbsn.ws/3znaiF8

Why we need professional journalists: JD Vance rep tells @wsj about Anna Kilgore, a Springfield OH woman whose cat went missing in August, so Kris Maher drives to her house. She found the cat in her basement and apologized to her Haitian neighbors.

This, from b-boy bouiebaisse, is brilliantly concise. & a lot of people are missing it, taking the rightward, violence-ward drive of Trump-which to journalists on this beat was inevitable--as an encouraging crackup. Whether it wins electorally, I don't know. But that's not its only goal.

A new report out today from Pregnancy Justice | @pregnancyjust.bsky.social finds that, in the first year after Dobbs, 210 pregnant people faced criminal charges related to pregnancy, birth, or pregnancy loss. This is the largest single-year number ever, and almost certainly still an undercount.
