A clip giving a glimpse of China's staggering military advances over 25 yrs, which continue at a gallop. Every nation has a right to do this. The problem is China's increasing aggressiveness toward its neighbors, destabilizing a region key to the world's economic future.

At times we need to step back in time & space to see a problem more clearly. This graphic shows more & more PLA Navy & Coast Guard presence in the S China Sea in the first 7 yrs of Xi’s rule. An updated version would show more bright red near PHL. In sum: PRC maritime colonialism

It looks increasingly like the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) is operating more openly as a financial tool of CCP geopolitical policy, almost like a PRC sovereign wealth fund: 18 August China’s ties with Vietnam are a diplomatic priority, Xi Jinping tells To Lam on

Rising strategic tension b/t nation-states is not just a PRC vs a U.S. thing. It's about how power will be used to reshape the internat'l order and rules that govern interstate relations. Many nations have benefited from the existing system in blue. China stands for the red.

Breaking up is hard to do. Even more complex is figuring out how to define a new, more guarded and realistic relationship. Why not get expert advice? theconversation.com/how-canada-fin…

1/ Recommended reading for insight by @dimi into how the channel between Jake Sullivan and Wang Yi is used to manage US-China relationship. This is the most consequential channel below presidential level for managing the relationship. Here's a bit of extra context (short 🧵).

After six years and 220 Chaguan columns, it’s time to leave Beijing. It has been an adventure and a privilege. My next beat will include a dose of China, happily: I’ll be writing a new weekly geopolitics column in The Economist. Column number 5 for me economist.com/china/2024/08/…

NEW: Chinese authorities have launched a campaign to change the term that people use to refer to Mongolian culture, in a move aimed at eroding Mongolian identity and sense of homeland. My latest, with brilliant colleagues Daria Impiombato and Nathan Attrill: aspistrategist.org.au/northern-front…

This should be a wake up call for all countries: Beijing will increasingly insist that its interests are more important and should prevail over the interests of other states. 👇

Then they came for the economists… Key indoctrination message: Officials should be “fearful in their hearts, careful with their words, and restrained in their actions.” #China #censorship #repression #rulebyfear wsj.com/world/china/to…

I half agree with this. Yes, democracies must prioritize freeing wrongfully detained citizens. But it's too reductionist to say that doing so incentivizes more hostage-taking. Thuggish states use asymmetric tactics to hurt open societies and will continue to take hostages
