Importance of biodiversity for human wellbeing Biodiversity forms the foundation for human survival on earth – for food, medicine, water, fibre/materials for construction, livelihoods, employment, national development (tourism, exports), resilience to climate change among others

1/2 Uganda (Francis Sabino Ogwal) served as Vice President to the CBD COP Bureau, representing the Africa region from 2012 -2014 Uganda (Francis Sabino Ogwal) was designated as the first chair of the Subsidiary Body on the Implementation (SBI) of the CBD during COP13 in 2016.

1/2 The major obligation of Uganda under the CBD is to implement the three objectives of the Convention, namely: conservation of biological diversity; sustainable use of components of biodiversity; and ensuring the fair and equitable benefits arising from the utilization of GRs

Create awareness on the importance of biodiversity, Live in harmony with nature – use nature wisely/sustainably, Restore nature through tree planting, cleaning up the environment, Stop littering, dispose waste properly, plant trees in your compound/homes

1/3 First and foremost, we need to protect all species including those we may view as not threatened or endangered now because they may be endangered in few years because of human activity.

The Framework will help the global community to take action across society to conserve, restore, wisely use and value biodiversity so that by 2050 people are living in harmony with nature

The global community will adopt goals and targets for the Framework and Uganda, like other countries in the world, will be required domesticate and implement those goals and targets through its national development frameworks and the NBSAP

1/2 Ecosystems provide services (like water, fibre, disaster risk reduction like regulation of floods and landslides; adaption to adverse impacts of climate change among others) that are very important for human well-being including the achievement of the SDGs

Mobilization through schools to restore the environment, Formation of school environment clubs; Revitalization of Uganda Wildlife Clubs; Engaging/involving the youth in national consultation on development of the post2020 global biodiversity framework

1/2 The current global COVID pandemic indicates that the world is likely to experience for pandemics in the future. Other pandemics have occurred in the past. Studies now so that there is a link between outbreak of pandemics and environmental degradation.

Carry out awareness on the importance of biodiversity using your networks Encourage your networks/followers to actively be involved in physical restoring nature or promote restoration of nature. Be part of the solution

1/2 Environmental and Social impacts assessment is carried out and mitigation measures identified; Developers implement the mitigation measures and regularly report to NEMA

plastics affect biodiversity on land and in water. Some animals ingest the plastics and hence die. Further micro plastics may get imbedded in the body of some animals like fish. Humans may also drink water containing micro plastics. The are harmful.

1/2 First there is no activity that can be carried out and has no impact and that is across the board. In case of biodiversity, the tool we use is the environmental and social impact assessment. Through this tool we are able to predict the potential impacts on biodiversity
