The Rhode Island Department of Education Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) showed up to the State House to oppose my bill HB: 5342 which would push to have RI students be taught nutrition, food prep and cooking courses be taught as part of the curriculum in all RI public schools. Let that sink in…..

The Providence Schools labeled in red are scheduled to close. The schools labeled in green have active construction projects... What do you notice? 👀 What do you wonder? 🤔

this makes me so happy for so many reasons. can't wait to let my students know the end result tomorrow morning, they've been intrigued to know more about labor unions and collective bargaining since notices were first sent home to families last week.

please consider helping if you can: one of my students' parents was detained on their way to work. he has (thankfully) been reunited with his family but they had to take on debt to post his bond. givebutter.com/amor4wilan

Yesterday, in committee on house on education, RIDE openly admitted that the two Providence elementary schools set to close at the end of this academic school year and the following school year were part of a plan to enroll more students in charter schools. This is very alarming

imo, the state takeover was built to be a disaster. the MO was always a move to charters for "failing" districts. (don't forget to check the charter school report cards these ""failing"" districts send to. spoiler alert: they're not all impressive).

🧵 1/ Providence, as the work week begins, I want to highlight a concerning lease proposal between Achievement First, a public charter, and the City of Prov. I have some serious concerns about specific provisions, and in this long thread, I'll outline them.

If the physical condition of the Alan Shawn Feinstein Elementary building is as bad as Downes Construction says, why are there charter schools already lining up to take over the building?? 🤨

I was literally just explaining this point about how the law providing for “mayoral academies” — charter schools that have a board chaired by the mayor — means that the conflict of interest is baked into the system.
