Angiosperm stomata do not respond continuously to rising VPD but often start to close only once a threshold VPD is crossed. We found that this is linked to the triggering of abscisic acid biosynthesis at the threshold VPD, which then closes the stomata academic.oup.com/plphys/advance…

We have a current search for an assistant professor position in basic plant biology, with one of the key fields of interest being plant responses or adaptation to climate change, please spread the word and consider applying careers.purdue.edu/job/West-Lafay…

We have found that abscisic acid biosynthesis is deactivated under long-term drought in species that have evolved highly embolism resistant xylem, this causes the peaking-type ABA dynamic onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/pc… Congratulations Joel A. Mercado Reyes!!

When a sort of plant is very thirsty, the small holes on its leaves kindly shut down to save water. It's like when you close your mouth to stop drinking the whole juice box at once.

Congrats to ⁦Cade Kane⁩ from ⁦Purdue BPP⁩ on a successfully defense! He is the 1st PhD student from the McAdam lab (⁦McAdam lab⁩)!! He’s already published a few chapters & is gearing up to submit the last two before he “leaves” us for his postdoc in Jan!

Plants, like conifers & tough angiosperms, use a clever ABA strategy in drought: ABA rises, then declines. 📈📉 In Callitris rhomboidea & Umbellularia californica, ABA production stops, forming conjugates. Read more here ⤵️ onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.11… Wiley Plant Science #OpenAccess

Had alot of fun writing this anatomy- physiology crossover with a great team🌳🫧 brill.com/view/journals/… Read about the potential roles of the cells surrounding the plant water transport system during drought, in the context of physiology & observations made by Sherwin Carlquist!

The first article of my thesis is ready! (🧵...) "Mechanical advantage makes stomatal opening speed a function of evaporative demand." academic.oup.com/plphys/article…

J. Pichaco (@javipichaco) 's Twitter Profile Photo

In it, we evaluated how the mechanical interaction of epidermal cells and guard cells in angiosperms influences the stomatal response to light. We observed how plants with this interaction respond faster to light at high levels of atmospheric demand than those that do not...

For this purpose, we use plants that cover the evolutionary spectrum, from ferns to angiosperms to gymnosperms. For this purpose, we use plants that cover the evolutionary spectrum, from ferns to angiosperms to gymnosperms...

Through measurements of gas exchange from darkness we see how at high atmospheric demand this interaction is lower and the process of stomatal opening is faster...

This study was carried out during my fruitful stay at Purdue University Purdue Agriculture in McAdam lab laboratory, where he has a long list of very interesting plant specimens. I could explain more, but I don't want to give you spoilers!!! Run and read it! :)
