Too much efficiency leads to catastrophic failure, and one way to avoid this is via redundancy, e.g., error correction. From Moshe Moshe Vardi's Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing Karp lecture. youtu.be/yKPWK0JIfMk

New preprint. We show protocols that achieve constant-overhead magic state distillation, surpassing the polylogarithmic overheads of existing protocols—a major bottleneck in FTQC. Joint work with Adam Wills Adam Wills and Min-Hsiu Hsieh Min-Hsiu Hsieh. arxiv.org/abs/2408.07764

There is also an interesting book, "Information, Physics, and Computation", discussing links between LDPC codes and stat mech. The links between decoding quantum stabilizer codes and stat-mech models may be related, & we suspect this is under-investigated. academic.oup.com/book/6337
