Two days after R3S left the bear carcass, Wolf O5E, a yearling male from the Half-Moon Pack, found the remains of the bear. Wolf O5E then visited the carcass 4 times over the next 6 days, spending a total of 24 hours at the carcass over the next 6 days (also a lot of time at a

We really only see wolves scavenging black bears in September and October, which coincides with the black bear hunting season which starts on September 1 and goes into October, though most hunting occurs in the first week or two of September.

During this period, we commonly find wolves scavenging gut piles of hunter-killed bears, and bears that were likely killed but never recovered/bears that were wounded and then died elsewhere and not recovered.

For instance, we have documented wolves scavenging 18 black bears over the past 3 years—and 16 of these bears were scavenged during bear season, with 12 bears scavenged in September.

Of the two that were scavenged outside of bear season: 1 was where someone dumped a bear carcass in a gravel pit in June, and the other was where wolves found an old pile of fur and bones in spring. Bear likely died the previous fall or winter.
