I spent three years over there researching cycling and the answer is a sporting system left over (albeit imperfectly intact) from Yugoslavia that allows children from all backgrounds and classes and places to participate in sports.

International basketball is 10x better than NBA

If you don’t play multiple sports from youth-> HS, you are missing out on quite a bit.

It’s important that this is ‘allowed’ at the high school and younger levels. Similar to pick play, it’s a nuanced way to win matchups (O and D) and gain advantages that aren’t reliant on greater athleticism.

Jannah does an excellent job of teaching dodgers the “chicken wing” effect with the lower elbow to lock defenders checks and hands into your body to free up top hand for shooting/feeding releases. Even more common/beneficial in box and space-constrained games.
