Happy 60th birthday to the inimitable
tori amos. Been following her and her music for over 30 years now. If you haven’t seen her playing two pianos at once, well, you haven’t lived. Anyone not familiar with her work can check it out here open.spotify.com/playlist/0xuCm…

Given how much work Baroness Casey did with the Cameron government this is quite something. theguardian.com/food/2023/aug/…

“ I’m 100% clear – and this is the first time I’ve said it out loud – that we need a change of government. This lot are spent. Even if you are a Conservative, you just can’t carry on with this. They are done. Finished.” Baroness Casey

Would be interesting if someone started collecting names for group litigation against the water companies. I imagine millions have been affected.

If the England men’s team were playing in a World Cup Final, Prince William (FA President) would be there. Rishi Sunak would be there. They would make flying over to Australia look as easy as popping to the corner shop for a pint of milk.

Finally finished 3rd vol of Simon Heffer’s masterful new edition of Henry “Chips” Channon’s diaries. Politically he amounted to little, and some of his views downright offensive, but the diaries are a wildly indiscreet romp through Westminster and high society. Highly recommended

My piece for The New Statesman on why the arguments for leaving the ECHR resemble the arguments for Brexit and would result in many of the same problems. This time, however, the public may be less convinced.

Sarina Wiegman surely the most successful manager in English football history now. Euros winners and now a world cup final.

‘Half of voters want second Brexit referendum in next decade’. It seems only a matter of time before we reverse this national act of self-harm.

The details in this thread are *damning*, especially given the PR considerations for “small boats week” that were at play. Shameful stuff.

Looks like the Government's efforts to use net zero as a wedge issue have had the effect of increasing public concern about the issue - not, one imagines, what they were hoping for

“Likeable”? Millions frightened about their mortgages, a tetchy out of touch billionaire PM, war with public sector workers, food banks, prison hulks for refugees, Rwanda, ECHR withdrawal threats, Brexit debacle, shit in the rivers… likeable would not be the word I’d choose

Makes you want to cry and also so angry. These poor humans risking everything for a better life. And we cannot open our doors to them in a civil and humane way. Generations will look back at us with complete disdain.
