If you spent any time on China-watching Twitter in 2021, you probably came across these two women.

Party-state media, Chinese diplomats & foreign vloggers tried to make out they were just an ordinary account.

We took a closer look & found out that wasn't quite right. 🧵

'“Normally, when you have a presidential bilat you start working out the agenda quite a while in advance, but Chinese diplomats are saying, ‘You guys whack us every other day — if that is the environment, how can we expect a positive outcome from a Xi-Biden meeting?’”.

As a public servant Mark Carney declines to offer a 'value judgement' on Brexit. He's happy to give a neutral valuation though: “Put it this way, in 2016 the British economy was 90 per cent the size of Germany’s. Now it is less than 70 per cent.' Boom. ft.com/content/f1f0a6…

For people in the Kremlin or elsewhere who imagine Putin could pop a nuke or two over Ukrainian forces to turn the tide of the war in his favor, read this from Colin Powell’s memoirs about whether to use nukes the 1991 Gulf War.

Useful thread on highlights from the new NSS. Given how uncontroversial much of this seems it is a bit of a mystery why it was so long delayed.

Lots to digest in the new, long delayed US national security strategy.

Strikes me this 5 point description of 'integrated deterrence' is now even more conceptually vague and confusing than when the Pentagon tended to focus mostly on points 1 and 5.

'The BoE is stuck between a rock and a hard place: it can allow high inflation & a weaker currency to erode standards of living & fuel an even worse cost-of-living crisis, or it can tighten aggressively @ risk sparking a mortgage crisis.' -Megan Greene
