Notable detail: Just an hour before Pres. Biden announced he was exiting the 2024 race last month, he was on the phone with his Slovenian counterpart, "urging them to make the final arrangements" for this massive prisoner swap, according to a senior administration official.

This is an incredible image. What it says to me is that, hostages and the officials responsible for their fate, are just people. The deep humanity of these stories—the abuses, the strength, the fragility of freedom, the heroes all with their own flaws,—are why they matter.
