We should demand fairness in who gets admitted to college. Students apply as individuals and deserve to be judged accordingly.

That should apply whether we’re talking about race, “legacy” status, or family wealth.

Don't get me wrong. I'm sure there were way too many ugly and hateful anti-Asian incidents during the pandemic. But using faux social science to prove that Trump caused it by using the term 'China virus' is just another example of political hackery pervading universities. 13/end

Observing, as the study does, a spike in reported incidents on March 20, 2020 (the day after the reporting website started), probably tells us more about the political response to Trump's comments -- if it doesn't just reveal an artifact of when they started collected reports.12/

It is also important to note that the Stop AAPI Hate reporting web site that provides the data for this study did not start collecting incidents until March 19, 2020, after and clearly as a political response to Trump's use of the term 'China virus.' 11/

Asserting that the use of the term 'China virus' is, by itself, evidence of anti-Asian hate seems dubious, especially given that the virus did originate there and
there is increasing evidence that it may have leaked from a Chinese government lab. See 10/ twitter.com/VanityFair/sta…

Name-calling and shunning are very bad, but by focusing on those the study risks observing no more than a tautology. If self-reported name-calling includes use of the phrase 'China virus,' then by definition name-calling spikes after Trump uses the term 'China virus.' 9/

The study also fails to detect any patterns in anti-Asian workplace discrimination or refusal of service. The observed spike in anti-Asian incidents is driven entirely by 'name-calling' and 'shunning' -- not 'violence.' 8/

So many dog whistles in one tweet 'major landlord' 'Yeshivas' 'Haredi', as if encouraging people to vote for a candidate is somehow sinister or un-American. The lack of even-handedness & impartiality when it comes to the Orthodox community is so disappointing.
