There absolutely shouldn't be, as I've argued from the moment they added it. The regular season should matter. Mind you, there would be no more eloquent argument against having a third Wild Card than for the Royals to stumble into the playoffs and then win the World Series.

Imagine what the draft hype would have been like had Ben Joyce thrown a pitch 105.5 mph in college. Oh wait, he did. It's the fastest collegiate pitch ever recorded. And still, 88 players were drafted before him in 2022. I've never understood it. I may never understand it.

First round, sure. Second round, maybe. But third round? If you can get a late inning reliever in the third round, you make that pick every year and twice in leap years.

The White Sox would have to finish the season 11-11 in order to avoid setting the modern major league record for losses in a season. Believe it or not, they actually had an 11-8 stretch earlier this season. But I'm thinking that's not likely to happen again.

One thought stands out above all, both for tonight and for the Royals in general: Having a quality starting pitcher take the mound every single night is such a rare and powerful thing. The 2024 Royals, who had the worst pitching staff in baseball 2 years ago, somehow have that.

Was I up after midnight to watch the Padres complete a comeback from down 5-0 to walk off the Tigers, giving the Royals a 5.5 game lead in the wild card race with 21 games to go? Yes I was. Was it worth it? Yes it was.

Bobby Witt Jr. now has 9.0 bWAR this season. This exceeds the highest bWAR in the history of the Texas Rangers (8.8, by Alex Rodriguez in 2002). It is September 5th.

For the first time ever, Patrick Mahomes takes the field for the Chiefs tonight with the Royals still in contention. What a time to be alive.

Good to see the Royals send a pitcher down to make room for Renfroe - no team needs 14 pitchers on its active roster. But I'm disappointed Cruz was sent down. He had retired all 10 hitters he faced as his newfound control - just 13 BB in his last 37 IP in Omaha - looks for real.

Creed still seems to be having issues with low snaps. I was really hoping the off-season and a new hold style would fix it.

Matt Araiza has as big a leg as any punter in...maybe ever, but he wasn't even the first punter drafted in his class because of his lack of touch. Using him to punt from midfield is suboptimal. On 4th and short, it's just dumb.

Honestly, that touchdown would be worth it if it finally taught Andy Reid not to punt in that situation. The problem is that we know it won't.
