Last week, I arrived as 🇮🇱 designated ambassador to Serbia. Yesterday, I was thrilled to find my father's house in Belgrade. My Serbian Jewish roots are taking shape, adding depth to my identity. I’m eager to discover more about this incredible country and my family's history.

Spring 1944: As the Red Army neared, the Germans became determined to eliminate the remaining 75k (approx) Jews in the Lodz ghetto. They reopened the Chelmno killing center and, after a 20-month pause, the deportations of the Jews from Lodz resumed that summer. #LodzGhetto

Via Yad Vashem: Having lost his wife Hinda and a son Israel-Meir, Holocaust survivor Avraham Benkel was deported in Aug 1944 on the last transport to Auschwitz from the Łódź ghetto with his son Shmuel. He wrote about arriving at the camp and seeing his son for the final time.

From US Holocaust Museum: Sara Plagier was b. Mar 26, 1927, in Lodz, the only daughter of Anszel and Mindl. Mindl died in 1940 inside the Lodz ghetto and Anszel in 1943. During the Aug 1944 liquidation, Sara was deported to Auschwitz. She survived to share her story. #NeverForget

Via Yad Vashem: A diary from the Lodz ghetto's final months was kept by a young man aware of the war's progress. When the ghetto was liquidated in Aug 1944, the “Unknown Diarist” was deported to Auschwitz and murdered. It was there the diary was found after the war. #Lodzghetto
