6 septembre 1535 Jacques Cartier débarque à l'île-aux-Coudres. C'est en remarquant l’abondance d'arbustes qu’il y trouve, chargés de noisettes sauvages, et qui ressemblent à des coudriers, qu'il lui donna ce nom. Le lendemain, on y célébra la première messe en terre canadienne.
