It doesn’t take long for these ghost ants to put on their Halloween costumes! Minutes after ingesting a mixture of sugar, water, and food coloring, these characteristically pale ants transform into bright beacons of color, thanks to their translucent bodies.

Of the world’s 3,000 species of cicada, some appear every year while others emerge from the ground to mate only every decade or two. Several ancient cultures regarded these insects as powerful symbols of rebirth because of their unusual life cycles.

This beauty is commonly known as a sea slug - a shell- less gastropod mollusc. Most species in this family are partially translucent, though they can vary greatly in body shape, color, and size.

Without the arching, fearsome tail of its venomous cousins, this harmless whip scorpion of Kenya and Tanzania looks more like a spider. Its name nods to its extra long front legs, which act as feelers when the scorpion moves around at night.

Found throughout the western United States, mule deer are relatively easy to identify thanks to large mule-like ears that set them apart from other deer species. During the summer and fall, males of this species will also grow distinctive antlers which they shed in the spring.

This juvenile eel’s huge nostrils and barbel-studded lower jaw make it easily recognizable in the reefs of the Pacific Ocean. Eels change from male to female during their lifetimes. As they change, so does their color; females are completely yellow.

Meet Bin, an endangered northern yellow-cheeked gibbon. Gibbons like Bin are exclusively arboreal, meaning that they spend almost all of their time in the trees, trying to never let their feet touch the ground.

While their tunneling behavior may label eastern moles as a backyard nuisance, they actually play a beneficial role in soil management and controlling the population of undesirable grubs and insects!

Few species love trees as much as two-toed sloths do. This species does everything in the trees, from eating and sleeping to mating and giving birth. While they will move from tree to tree, individuals rarely stray far from the general area where they were born.

Meet “Mzimu”. In Swahili, Mzimu means spirit or ghost - the perfect name for a leucistic okapi. This condition, which has never been seen in an okapi in human care before, causes a lack of pigmentation in the hair and skin, giving Mzimu his rare white-gray appearance.

Lorises, like this pygmy slow loris, are the only existing venomous primate species in the world. Venom is produced by mixing secretions from a gland on their elbow with their saliva, which is then delivered into the bloodstream of their victims via their razor-sharp teeth.

Resembling an unruly platter of pasta, this Mediterranean snakelocks sea anemone uses more than 200 sticky, stinging tentacles to find and consume prey that are often too large for other anemones to tackle. Some of their favorites include sea snails, fish, and prawns.

We’re celebrating by highlighting a species that has been on Earth for over 70 million years - the solenodon! Unlike many species which change over time, the Hispaniolan solenodon is thought to be virtually unchanged.

As indigenous people fight to protect their land, they are protecting the homes and futures of thousands of species. Today, we recognize the important role these communities play in teaching the art of living on Earth while maintaining a healthy relationship with the land.

Pemba Island is home to Pemba flying foxes like this one. This species was first described by scientists in 1909. Eighty years later, reports indicated that these bats were at risk of extinction, resulting in the species being listed as critically endangered.
