Helen introduces herself as if for the first time... as a way of seeing through this project: her own logic, enthusiasm; her private rationale and sense of broader purpose to doing what, if it were not for the baby, she'd have no cause to be doing." #katebriggs24

We had such a fabulous weekend! Highlights were our lovely suite at Hotel deLuxe, a delicious Peruvian dinner on the patio at Casa Zoraya, the French Moderns exhibition at Portland Art Museum, a relaxing stroll thru Lan Su Chinese Garden & a stack of used books from Powell's Books.

Great podcast from Spiracle with the peerless Sophie Lewis, who has translated Peirene books from both French AND Portuguese. Sophie reflects on the changing role of translators in the industry 👇 spiracleaudiobooks.com/interviews/sop…

#KateBriggs24 "The whole lecture course is in this question: What distance must I maintain between myself and others if we are to together construct a sociability without alienation, a solitude without exile? As one might expect, the lecture course offers no response."

I endeavor to spend time each birthday with loved ones, eating delicious food, watching a film I love, reading a book I love, breathing fresh air. Today was a smashing success! Yay for birthdays.🥳 Thank you, Drew North!🥰

I have found my way to a friend’s cabin for a few solo days in the mountains & will be mostly offline. Bliss. I’ll check back in on Sunday #NYRBWomen24 & #KateBriggs24. Until then, happy reading.

Today's #WaferThinBook: The Life and Death of Harriet Frean by May Sinclair (1922, 183p. but really shorter) A case study in how being a good and proper Victorian daughter could ruin your life without your even knowing it. #SpinsterSeptember

#NYRBWomen24 Our next book begins tomorrow!! I've been looking forward to this one — Diana Athill's DON'T LOOK AT ME LIKE THAT, published by NYRB Classics last year. "Athill skillfully blends diffidence & pathos to produce a story at once all too familiar & unique."-Catherine Taylor

On this glorious early autumn morning, I am reminded of what Virginia Woolf wrote, ‘All the months are crude experiments, out of which the perfect September is made.' Isn't that lovely? Thank you Rather Good Art.

“I needed to paint because certain things gave me a vague ache in my stomach and a feeling of longing combined with an itch to do something about them…For years my favourite painting…was Benozzo Gazzoli’s ‘Nativity’ in the Medici chapel…” (p5) #NYRBWomen24
