One of the big chapters in The Rejects is on Sugababes and the musical talent that went into them. Great to see where that and a lot of tenacity can lead.

Finally found the box of some of my most treasured books and got them safely back to LA (they've crossed the Atlantic at least twice.) Feels like a snapshot from life in 2010, mainly as two were signed then. Alan Warner called the doodle 'one of my madonnas.'

RIP Alexander Waugh. I met him very briefly in 2017, attempting to explain the idiosyncrasies of US milk to him as we poured coffee. He was charming and funny, and I was struck by the Evelyn-like eyes. Appropriately for a Waugh, this obit is hilarious. thetimes.com/uk/obituaries/…

Finally got to Challengers and absolutely loved it. A very American pain viewed through a European sensibility. Clever, zippy timeline jumping, great ending and WHAT A SOUNDTRACK

The new Tim Parks novel, Mr Geography, is the best I've read in a while. Reminds me of A Month in the Country - short, compulsive and very moving. Also, I've never read such an exciting use of past/ present scenes - often segueing in the same para, as in a mind. It's just great.
