📢 The Household Support Fund is being extended. This will be welcome news to families struggling with the cost of essentials like food and energy. But this move alone isn't enough. We need a broader, urgent plan to tackle the hardship, hunger and cold that millions face.

Years of eroding social security and social housing means the state now spends £1bn each year on emergency household support and £1bn on temporary housing for the homeless. Those are the narrow direct fiscal costs. The economic costs much larger. The human costs incalculable.

Families are at breaking point. It is an emergency when millions cannot afford the essentials. 🗣️ As politicians return from summer recess, we’re asking the government to take urgent action to address hardship.

This briefing is crass, heartless and wrong ⬇️ People who can’t afford to eat enough or stay warm cannot wait, we need a plan to tackle hardship urgently now. Being able to afford the essentials is the most basic of foundations for a strong economy.
