When it comes to editorial failure to do due diligence in verification, sourcing — or even “wanting to believe”, The Wire is not alone. It’s in the company of dozens of media organisations in India and abroad. Remember The New York Times, Judith Miller, WMD, & the Iraq War?

Strangely, that person’s name does not seem to figure in the Delhi Police’s FIR. Key to this case is investigating that person’s motive in enabling this deception & fraud perpetrated on The Wire.

As The Wire’s statement points out: “Whether the person who brought all the material to The Wire deceived us at anyone else's behest or acted on his own is a matter that will be subjected to judicial process in due course. The malintent to discredit The Wire is obvious.”

What is this FIR about? It is clear that The Wire and the journalists who worked on the meta stories were the victims — not the perpetrators — of an elaborate fraud through disinformation, forgery & a possible conspiracy.
