At least 163 police agencies across California let cops charged with misconduct retire quietly in exchange for permanently burying the misconduct case. The cops then instantly get hired for other police jobs, and all these secret deals are written by the same police lobby group.

Woah. Fun. Buried in DOJ adtech antitrust exhibits posted overnight is a highly sensitive summary of Google's monitoring and spinning of the DOJ's search antitrust complaint in 2020 - yes, the landmark case the US DOJ just won. Keep this in mind as you read my thread. /1

Ingredients: a project code-name -> 'BeeGee,' 'fake privilege' as one of Google's legal eagles has called it only to be scorched by Courts, and a Google blog post (AKA PR spin) dutifully shared by influencers and press which is Google's key goal (Facebook does this, too). /2

At the top of the wins is getting the WSJ Editorial Board to weigh in. Google accomplished this with a "deft" briefing by its chief legal officer, Kent Walker. Google also noting many of its blog spin arguments were used verbatim. Yeaaaay Google PR team. /3

Next up was briefings of other key outlet opinion groups (Bloomberg, Fox, FT) and influencers (Casey Newton) who they know will bleed into social media and news coverage. Also, strategic is a "leak" of memo from the CEO and then "regular briefings" for press to set headlines. /4

A more complex big win is getting a veteran tech journalist like Nilay Patel to opine, "the complaint is a vacation" for Google embedded into a widely supported tech analyst like Ben Thompson. Double victory. Yeah Google PR. I wonder if Google is back from its holidays. /6

In that bucket would also be another major tech journalist, here Levy, over the history of the web to also weigh in quickly with a "nothing burger" take on the day of. Again, it's hard to go against opinions like these: Newton, Patel, Levy. /7

Google also likes to wind up its "supporters" (note from Kint: I was not on their list) to unleash and recommend to their media outlets. If they like your take, you'll get pitched. /8

Wow, Google even monitors its own employees reactions to major news like this. "Tone is neutral" "stock is largely unaffected" and of course, "Communicate with Care" which the Courts have interpreted as let your sensitive chat messages purge and copy lawyers on emails. /9

Bottom-line, this landmark suite was a "Very High" cycle for Google. The Court issued a landmark opinion nearly 4yrs later that much of the opinions and influencers were wrong on. Of course, many hadn't read the complaints or seen the evidence. They were just spun. Beware. /10

I did some calculations, and found that alleged rental price fixing could be responsible for up to a quarter of rental inflation since 2020. And maybe a lot more. thebignewsletter.com/p/up-to-a-quar…

NEW: As #Diddy sits in custody ahead of his criminal trial, the federal investigation continues.   A source familiar with the investigation tells me that multiple witnesses who have worked for Combs have been meeting with prosecutors. At least one male sex worker is expected to
