The 'Tempo' was in a way 'the' Berlin newspaper of the 1920s. So good to hear that there is a book about it now. Perfect reading for chilly autumn nights.

As for Dr Isidor Kastan, who was also a journalist & author of #Berlin history books, he found curious fame in that for years after the 'Vor Sonnenaufgang' premiere forceps were called by Berliners 'Kastanietten'.

It was 1st time #Berlin theatre audience was confronted with a naturalist (the warts & all approach). 'Pile of manure/fricassee of nonsense/bucketfuls of faeces' were only some negativ critics. But there were also positiv ones ( #Fontane ). 1912 Gerhart Hauptmann won #NobelPrize .

#OTD 1889 Gerhart Hauptmann's play 'Vor Sonnenaufgang' (Before Sunrise) had its premiere at #Berlin 's Lessing-Theater. The scandal it caused went down in history: Dr Isidor Kastan, obstetrician in the 1st row, tossed his forceps onto the stage in protest against the birth scene.
