As for Dr Isidor Kastan, who was also a journalist & author of history books, he found curious fame in that for years after the 'Vor Sonnenaufgang' premiere forceps were called by Berliners 'Kastanietten'.

It was 1st time theatre audience was confronted with a naturalist (the warts & all approach). 'Pile of manure/fricassee of nonsense/bucketfuls of faeces' were only some negativ critics. But there were also positiv ones ( ). 1912 Gerhart Hauptmann won .

1889 Gerhart Hauptmann's play 'Vor Sonnenaufgang' (Before Sunrise) had its premiere at 's Lessing-Theater. The scandal it caused went down in history: Dr Isidor Kastan, obstetrician in the 1st row, tossed his forceps onto the stage in protest against the birth scene.
