The Rubio Bill, which has been around for half a decade, is very much *not great.* Rubio deserves credit for recognizing that the current model for student loans creates debt traps. Debt traps are bad. Replacing debt traps with giant junk fees is also bad. 1/

It's remarkable how quickly the cross-partisan wonky view on higher ed finance is becoming universal IDR. Jonathan Glater and I explain what's going on and why it's a problem in a forthcoming draft: x.com/LDHerrine/stat… (law reviews: it's still available!)

This is bad wonking. Even if SAVE is struck down (based on legal theories that would have been laughed out of court 10 years ago), now we're talking about what the legislature should do. And, if you like SAVE (I don't!), Gillibrand has already proposed a bill to enact it!

So doesn't Kamala's continued poll surge put paid to the thesis that it was unfairly critical media coverage of Biden that caused his bad polling and bad vibes about inflation?

There will have to be more reporting, but this sure looks like Penn's interim President lied to the Philadelphia mayor about students threatening to harm officers in order to convince the reluctant mayor to arrest protestors. thedp.com/article/2024/0…

Wow this clip of Peter Bergson, one time revisionist Zionist & Irgun member, talking about how his efforts to rescue European Jews during the Holocaust led to him ceasing "being a Zionist", is quite amazing. Despite obvious disagreements, a lot of this will sound very familiar

I'm still watching this interview & Bergson just said something that completely stunned me. My brain can't even process it. He says he tried to separate Holocaust rescue from Palestine & was rebuffed & called a "traitor to Zionism". "if this is Zionism, I'm not a Zionist"

the funniest part of this cover is that when @newyorker actually had an employee who pointed out the lack of diversity & representation on its own staff—with no Black editor for articles hired in ~15 yrs—instead of thanking her they put her on a retaliatory PIP & fired her…

I have a piece "Taking our Lives out of their Portfolios" in this forum⬇️ in brief: "why are the financial assets of working people in public and union pension funds managed by these extractive asset managers in the first place? How do we take our lives out of their portfolios?"

We sent our student editors into the blog mines, and they've returned with untold treasures. Beyond inflicting the pangs of nostalgia upon longtime readers, we're hoping that this series will offer a way in to various subjects for students and newer readers!

This is an embarrassment. The judge didn't say what "rule" he blocks- there is no "Third Mass Debt Cancellation Rule". It is a raw exercise of political power by a judge in a remote corner of Georgia, harming millions nationwide. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.usco…
