And now we are 3-for-3. Cardenas-Arechiga was a close fight but one judge had a 98-92 score. Too many times we hear, "yes, but the right guy won" but that ignores the problem because we've seen many fights in which two judges (and even all) have errant tallies. Solutions?

While watching Nunez trying to finish Marriaga, my mind kept flashing back to my dad yelling at the TV screen "up the middle! Up the middle!" The uppercut was his favorite punch because of its element of surprise, and Nunez would do well to use that weapon.

Nunez is now 28-1 with 28 KOs following the second knockdown, but it's clear that while he's an offensive force with very heavy hands, there are a lot of holes in his game. He will always be dangerous, but he needs more dimensions before meeting the Cacace-Warrington winner.

Because of an issue between DIRECTV and the ESPN family of channels, I can't access them on the dish. I do have ESPN-Plus, great because I'll get to see Inoue fight tomorrow morning, but these annual skirmishes have been quite annoying. What if this ever gets permanent?

Lee Groves (@leegrovesboxing) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Although Inoue wasn't spectacular in the way we are used to seeing him be, he was rightly respectful of Doheny's feints and counters, then turned on the jets at the right time. Yes, the ending was anticlimactic, but he is now 21-0 (19 KO) in widely recognized title fights.

Given that I grew up (and still live) in a town in rural West Virginia, number three is the obvious choice. How tiny is Friendly? According to the 2020 census the population is 100 and it's probably lower now. Everyone has a soft spot for home, and that's the case with me.

During this week's "ITC: The Podcast," which will premiere tomorrow at 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT, James Smitty Smith offers these provocative thoughts about Naoya Inoue following his somewhat anticlimactic TKO win over TJ Doheny this past Tuesday. Is he starting to show signs of slippage?

Lee Groves (@leegrovesboxing) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Boxing is a global sport, and thanks to ESPN + Inoue's fights in Japan can be seen either live or on demand. Inoue has already fought in the U.S. twice and how many cared? Hard-cores? Yes. Casuals? By definition no. By the way, not many U.S. boxers are crossover stars in the U.S.

Lee Groves (@leegrovesboxing) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Boxing is still treated as a serious sport elsewhere, and Japan boasts a rich history and a big fan base. He draws well there and not here; the math is easy. Another sign of U.S. decay; some U.S.-born boxers opt to market themselves by heritage and not by where they were born.

For years I was hesitant to join Twitter/X, but was convinced to take the plunge nearly 2 1/2 years ago because I was told it would benefit my career. Since then, that supposition has been proven correct; I've made new friends and it has been an effective vehicle for the podcast.

Not only do I remember this, but I remember a time before this. Based on this narrative, I must be so old that dirt calls me "grandpa." :-)

I turned on the TV before a treadmill session. The first image I saw was a soot-covered man and I first thought it was a trailer for a disaster film. Once I turned up the sound I realized the second plane had hit. I worked on the copy desk of a newspaper and was called into work.
