Delighted to be sharing my wee paper ‘From the tooth to the (horses) tail of the army’ at Equine History conference this year. The programme looks really splendid - looking forward to catching as many zoom talks as I can, just sad I can’t be there in person.

Really looking forward to this. I'll be giving a talk on BEF equines on the Western Front titled 'Why do only Mules and Horses work?’ and I can't promise that the rest of the paper will be as good as the title but I'll try my best...

‘No penetrationist, however employed, can ever be said to be entirely free from the influence of the mule. At some point or other everyone will have a mule in his life, on his toes…or stepping quietly on his face while he sleeps. ’ - Jungle, Jungle, Little Chindit #MuleMonday

A slightly different #MuleMonday: Actor Donald O’Connor and Francis the Talking Mule, together they filmed 7 movies in the 50s. The mule's real name was Judy, a Californian pack mule that was lent to the studio but they never returned her to his real owner, Archie Dean.

Looking muleish but sneaking this wonderful photo by John Warwick Brooke in on #WarHorseWednesday regardless. Horse transport by night... evidently our equine chums were rather spooked by the burst of light required to take the photo! 📷digital.nls.uk/74546980

Operation Matador, the capture of Ramree & neighbouring islands in Arakan 1945 by 26 Indian Div. Whilst brutal fighting ensued, hundreds of Japanese were *not* killed by hungry crocodiles 🐊 as certain 'history' websites will tell you. 'Tis but a war time myth. 📷Imperial War Museums SE 2254

Breed Specific Legislation does not work. Especially when what you’re trying to ban is not even a recognised breed. Dog licensing & harsher punishments for irresponsible breeders and owners (of all dogs) is what is desperately required in this country.

Many years ago, my Grandad, Ted Syms, gave a talk at the local primary school about the fighting in Arakan and the Battle of Hill 170. Clearing out my gran’s house this week we found lots of ‘thank you’ cards from the kids. Joel here has nailed some Japanese jungle tactics.
