Great talk from Sara Peixoto on improving #eDNA monitoring for invasive #mussels through further validation of existing assays and large scale field testing. New records of quagga mussel provided indicating the species is more widespread than previously thought #UKDNAWG24

Stunning keynote by ⁦Berkeley EvoLab⁩ - from the visionary #vonHumboldt to #metabarcoding, #island ecology, #invasion #competition. Wow: #volcanic! #UKDNAWG24

Fab keynote by Rosemary Gillespie on #metabarcoding data matching biogeographical theory, exemplified by Hawaiian Islands with natural age gradient. DNA data gives info on ecological communities, function and resilience. Involving local communities key to restoration #UKDNAWG24

Discussing time series #eDNA is Sebastian Mynott. 12 yrs, 3 markers, passive (50L) & point (1L) sampling. Passive gave 20x more DNA than point sampling. Samples collected in early yrs had higher sp richness. Matching trawl data up to 2018 showed decline in sp recovered over time #UKDAWG24

Phil Davison discussing whether a +ve detection of invasive marine species by #eDNA is truly a +ve. Found ~ 10% new species for UK. Seems unlikely. Reasons inc tax reassignment, incorrect genbank entries etc. Why caution must be taken interpreting own & others results! #UKDNAWG24

Amy Thorpe discussing use of sedimentary DNA to reconstruct past microbial community dynamics. Compared sedDNA & microscopy. Able to track community trends over time & found increases tracked w/ onset of eutrophication. Each method also detected distinct communities #UKDNAWG24

Some very cool Irish #lake #sedDNA results from Andrew Tighe going back ~10,000 years 🐗🐺🦌🐂 but those pesky #otters are still eluding detection even from sediment cores! Keep an eye out for the publication 👀 #UKDNAWG24

Katie Clark from Natural England sharing the goals of creation & optimisation of airborne #eDNA samplers. Want to develop new methods to survey terrestrial biodiversity in low cost, efficient way. Need help so asking community what they need & what can they do for you #UKDNAWG24

Great talk by Jake Jackman. 4 #eDNA capture methods compared for #fish detection - sterivex performed best followed closely by metaprobe. #eDNA transport by tidal movement modelled for scenarios of #eDNA detection relative to known distribution, or spurious detection #UKDNAWG24
