Connecting unsheltered people with permanent housing and wraparound services immediately, rather than arresting them for sleeping outside? Very demure, very mindful.

Against this background, Maura Healey should reverse the shelter policy. Here's why: -These policies never serve as a deterrent. We have proof of this from other states that have tried this strategy. Why? Because when people are being forced to come through points of entry- a

Thank you to everyone who joined us yesterday & to Marilyn Humphries Photography for capturing these images at the visibility action outside of the state's Special Commission on Emergency Housing Assistance Programs meeting. Afterwards, some of us went into the meeting to listen.

#Mapoli I need you to prep to open your congregations for emergency overnights. “But by Monday night the money had dried up, leaving organizers the unenviable task of telling families, some with infants, they had no better option than to sleep outside.”patriotledger.com/story/news/202…

“We’ve got to stop treating people like criminals. People who are homeless could be looking for a job or for a landlord to rent to them, but instead they’re moving their tents around every day. It’s just not a very smart way to go about solving the problem.” - Steve Berg

Maura Healey’s new policy makes families pick between 5 days of short-term shelter and then being w/o shelter for 6 months, or staying homeless with the hope that they’ll get a spot in the long-term shelter. That’s a cruel choice to force on people and why they’re declining.

ALSO it’s absurd for Maura Healey to say families should choose respite centers and be kept out of shelter for 6 months, suggesting that 5 days is enough for families to be connected to housing or adequate services If that were true WE WOULDNT HAVE A SHELTER CRISIS RIGHT NOW

NEW: A key program the state uses to find housing for homeless families (+ relieve pressure on shelter system) is so backed up that some applicants are missing out on apartments because some landlords have gotten fed up with waiting.bostonglobe.com/2024/09/03/met… w/ Mike Damiano #mapoli

But wait Maura Healey I thought 5 days was long enough to get connected to services and alternative housing? That's why you want families to forfeit access to shelter for 6 months by using a 5 day stay in respite centers, right?

Alongside families experiencing homelessness, advocates, providers, faith leaders, etc., we walked the halls of the State House to let Governor Healey & the Legislature know that we will NOT stop showing up against the harmful, cruel policy changes to EA until they are rescinded.
