The MassBike team had a great time supporting the George Street Bike Challenge for Major Taylor this weekend! MassBike and CMRPC each had a staffer who raced in the event! We also teamed up to distribute bike-friendly information at the top of the climb.

125 years ago on this date, Aug. 3 - "Worcester Whirlwind" Major Taylor on a mission, chasing motor-paced bicycle world record. His frenemy Eddie McDuffee had clocked a mile in 1 minute, 28 seconds at New Bedford, MA, five days earlier.

#OTD Aug. 4, 1898 - Waltham Mfg. Co. ad in Cycle Age dubbed Major Taylor "King of Sprinters." Yesterday at The Waltham Museum, collector Rick Wolfe showed an Orient chainless bike that appears to be the same model Taylor used to set world records in Philadelphia a few months later.

🥰Luciyan, YMCA of Central Mass camper & recipient of the cool blue Schwinn Bikes bike from this year's George Street Bike Challenge raffle. Champion cyclist Major Taylor was thrilled to join the Worcester YMCA in the 1890s, after he'd been barred from the Y in Indy because of his color.
