Drought and conflict have exacerbated the humanitarian situation in #Afar region, pushing thousands to the brink.
Thanks to EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid 🇪🇺 support, UNHCR + DanChurchAid Ethiopia distributed cash to >8,500 refugees & host community members in Aysaita and Serdo to help meet essential needs.

Conflicts and climate change are forcing people from their homes, amidst a cost of living crisis most devastating for the poorest.

Against this backdrop, I addressed the #UNGA Third Committee.

We need solutions to help those forced to flee. UNHCR stands ready to help find them.

Every time we meet, the challenges are more daunting but we remain proud to be part of Team United Nations, sparing no effort to convince our divided world — with patience and persistence — that only unity will allow us all to overcome and prosper.

#UNHCREthiopia ’s is one of 12 #refugee operations in the world faced with severe underfunding. Without urgent financial support, UNHCR and partners will be forced to make further cuts in life-saving support to refugees & their hosts.

For 30 years the DAFI scholarship programme has transformed the lives of refugee students, thanks to GermanForeignOffice leading support and contributions by the Czech MFA, Denmark MFA 🇩🇰, and the private sector.

Our goal: to have 15% of refugees in tertiary education by 2030!

In #Ethiopia , 2,135 refugees were able to attend university and earn academic degrees in the past 20 yrs

#DAFI graduate Ruta Teklemariam said “All of us fellow DAFI Alumni students were lucky to get the chance to see a wonderful light.”
Scholarships like these allow refugees to contribute to host countries & countries of origin or third countries, if they qualify for resettlement.

More than 2⃣0⃣ million people in #Ethiopia require humanitarian assistance.

This includes families like Mohammed Sabri's in #Afar . They have lost many of their livestock due to #drought , go without meals & walk long distances in the heat to get water.

Thanks to access to education and support from women role models, Nyakuet and other refugee students in Ethiopia are able to:

This morning at the ⁦UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency⁩ #EXCOM22 in Geneva we had an excellent session with partners ⁦IFC,⁩ Africa Enterprise Challenge Fund & Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria Microfinance Foundation on broadening private sector engagement in forced displacement contexts

This #TeachersDay2022 , we honor people like Mr. Koat Reath. Together with other 2,500 primary & secondary education teachers, 64% of whom are refugees like him & 36% are Ethiopian hosts, he is doing his part to make sure that children in Ethiopia’s refugee camps get an education.
