A brief view of Northern Lights Tuesday night around 11pm or so for some spots in the Pacific Northwest. First pic is from Laura Merrill out in Manzanita, 2nd pic is from Greg McCaw in Parkdale. These are unlikely to reappear tonight, the weak solar storm has subsided

Heat returns for last days of August; not dangerous, but a Saturday scorcher! Detailed weekend coastal forecast in my blog post too! kptv.com/2024/08/29/hea…

Yes, it's a cliché, but true. A "dry heat" feels different. Relative humidity down in the mid-teens metro area and Willamette Valley due to dry easterly wind. Expect similar feel Friday, then hotter and (slightly) more humid Saturday

🌧️ Cool & drizzly today, but things are about to heat up! We're looking at two First Alert Weather Days later this week, with temps possibly hitting 100° on Thurs. 🌡️ If we reach triple digits again Fri, it’ll be the latest in PDX history. Stay tuned for more details! #PDXWeather

Meteorological summer has ended (June-August). It was the 5th warmest on record in Portland. Records go back to 1940. In Astoria it was the 4th warmest. July was scorching hot, but just slightly warmer than normal in June & August

Thursday may be the hottest September day since I was just out of high school...a long time! Portland has only hit 100° twice in September. New weather blog post this evening covers return of hot weather later this week kptv.com/2024/09/03/rar…

First Alert Weather Days for Thursday and Friday, but do we actually hit 100°? Or due to fire smoke do we slide in a couple of degrees lower? Tough call, but we know it'll be a sickly yellow sun next few days as central/eastern OR smoke moves west of Cascades

On this date 7 years ago, the #EagleCreekFire raced westward 15+ miles through the western Columbia River Gorge on a hot easterly wind. I left after first hit of 10pm show after finding out home was in Level3 evac zone. Luckily just 1 home lost in the end fox12weather.wordpress.com/2017/09/04/dan…

Day #1 of 4-day heat wave "underperformed". It's the time of year (end of warm season) where we need easterly breezes to really max out temps. PDX only hit 91; models were going 94-98. East wind surfaces tomorrow = 100° in parts of metro area. A real scorcher on the way Thurs/Fri

It happened! First 100° September day in Portland since 1988. That's the 3pm temp, most likely we'll end up around 102° or so. Yep, it's a scorcher, even with all the fire smoke overhead. That smoke is thicker in the valley, holding Salem/Eugene below 100°...for now

Air quality sure LOOKS worse than 24 hours ago, but not too bad, mainly MODERATE in metro at 3pm. Should go downhill with overnight cooling as pollutants settle, then vast improvement for Sunday. That should be a "clean air" day west of Cascades

~450 cloud/ground lightning strikes from Central Oregon into the Willamette Valley from 4-9pm. Does not include many more cloud to cloud flashes. Only 1 strike in past half hour, but anyone could see a flash during the night over/west of Cascades

Saturday morning’s low of 67 was a new record-warm night for September at PDX. Previous record was set just 5 years ago on Sept 1st, 2019

All those lightning strikes Friday night and yesterday have started several large fires in Central Oregon. A large area around Mt Bachelor is threatened. Quite a plume on satellite this evening
