Today is World Snake Day! Did you know that there are almost 4,000 species of snakes in the world? Our collection is made of historic specimens collected many decades ago and includes cobras from India, adders in a spirit jar, snake skins and even the tip of a rattlesnake tail!

This seaman's wooden chest belonged to Captain James Neish (1787-1867), the man responsible for bringing the first load of jute to the city on his ship the Fort William. Many thanks to the National Fund for Acquisitions for helping us with the purchase of the chest.

James Orchison was a crew member and blacksmith on Nova Zembla’s journey under Captain Kilgour to the Davis Strait, between Greenland and Canada, in 1883-1884. This violin is believed to have been made by him in 1910, it was restored in 2005

Who can resist a penguin parade, have you spotted this guy on display in our #ThisJustIn exhibition? Carved by local man George Sinclair Snr on to the tooth of a Sperm whale whilst working on board the whaler Southern Harvester. George joined the Antarctic whaling fleet in 1949.

It’s hard to miss the iconic Laurie’s of Dundee nursery sign, one of the biggest objects in our #ThisJustIn exhibition. Discovered during the clearing of their former Blackness nursery site, the well-respected family firm of landscape gardeners were well known across Scotland.
