I hope more are awakening to the reality that gaining individual career success in the academy is not and has never been the answer to liberation. Representation does not guarantee freedom & justice. We need more brave people willing to imagine beyond our current realities.

The best antidote to burnout is not teaching people coping skills to handle stress. It's redesigning work to reduce stress.

The cure for exhaustion is removing overwhelming demands and the norm of self-sacrifice.

Healthy workplaces value well-being as much as performance.

Retaining, not just recruiting, women of color in medicine is vital | The Seattle Times

This is not the fault of individuals. Systems must change meaningfully. Otherwise, this will continue to happen. Our field & our patients will suffer.

I wish I could say that being a pregnant surgical resident was fine. But that wouldn’t be the whole story. And if we don’t share the whole story, how will things continue to improve?

Confidence doesn't always come from believing in yourself today. It often stems from recalling the obstacles you overcame yesterday.

A history of resilience can silence self-doubt. Challenges conquered are clues to hidden strengths.

Past progress is proof of future potential.

Watch:

Yesterday, at a DC event on “the critical importance of supporting and safeguarding health workers,” USAID rep Dr. Atul Gawande struggled to respond when activists asked him to condemn the US-funded Israeli assault on Gaza, which has killed scores of health-workers.

TW: Suicide

My office is full of people like Dr Candia-Bailey.

There is such hopelessness in toxic work environments&yet as a culture we often blame the person affected—or dismiss their cries for help or mental health repercussions.

This needs to change. Now. Not later.

If we mistreat & dehumanize young doctors--essentially teaching them that human life is not of value--they may learn to dehumanize patients.

Not only do our patients deserve our respect and kindness, so do our learners: our students, residents, and fellows.

Why Black doctors like me are leaving faculty positions in academic medical centers

I wrote this piece almost exactly 4 years ago. I'm reposting in light of the news about President Gay's resignation. Academia is a toxic environment for Black people.

If you died today, the hospital/clinic where you work would replace you tomorrow.

Spend time with the people in your life that love you, couldn’t replace you, and wouldn’t want to.

And only do things that make you say Hell Yes and provide you purpose.

I just met a new patient. Her family present. “Where are you from”, they asked. “Palestine”, I said. “We are First Nations. They did to us what they are doing to your ppl. We are with you, indigenous to indigenous”, they wept and embraced me. I was the ‘doc’, but they healed me.

This is the timeline we’re in

Department chairs in medicine telling residents to stop speaking up about Palestine as children are bombed nonstop…because it “made some people feel ‘unsafe’”

Feelings over the mass murder of children

There’s no humanity in Western medicine
