International team including recent grad Ph.D. Dr. Quinton Lawton, NSF National Center for Atmospheric Research & ECMWF via AGU (American Geophysical Union) are improving understanding of Convectively Coupled Kelvin Waves in the tropics, including how they impact extreme weather like hurricanes and heavy rainfall. bit.ly/3WkIadt

I’m thrilled to announce that I will be starting as an Assistant Professor at University of Miami Rosenstiel School and UM IDSC (jointly) beginning next month. I’m incredibly grateful to have this opportunity. As you can see, the family is pretty excited too!

An African easterly wave in the Atlantic has some potential for TC development in the long term. I’d be watching how well it maintains convection over the next few days. GFS trends are fairly consistent with its propagation over the next few days. qlawton.rsmas.miami.edu

The dry wave (very dry) in the Atlantic is trucking along. Still some model support for eventual development, but it won't be anytime soon. If it does develop/intensify, it'll probably be as the storm begins to turn north in the Bahamas and likely curves near or east of Florida.

Just a reminder that if the tropical Atlantic miraculously remains quiet though August 31, the ACE (Accumulated Cyclone Energy) this season would finally meet up with the average value.

Looking beyond #Debby briefly...the Atlantic should be increasingly favorable in the coming weeks as the MJO moves into Africa. Lower shear is forecast, and moisture should gradually increase. There's a couple waves already out there worth keeping an eye on - more to come

August 8 is the date of climatological peak heat index in Miami. Up to and including that hump day, here are the total number of hours spent above a few heat index thresholds going back 76 years. It's almost as if something is changing... 🤔
