Is it time for NIH to switch from cataloging microbial genes/gene products (i.e., human microbiome project) to supporting functional analyses though new initiatives?

This Cell paper on the 'cancer microbiome' repeats all the mistakes that gave us the so-called 'fetal microbiome'. Inadequate contamination controls, no culture data, no microscopy. And is it really ecologically plaucible that 165 genera colonize tumors? cell.com/cell/fulltext/…

Lactate production is important to regenerate NAD+ during anaerobic growth like fermentation (like the microenvironment of a plaque or cavity). How well will it compete with microbes that do not have this fitness disadvantage? Seems like they aren't considering ecology here.

Check out our new paper on how Epithelial Hypoxia maintains colonization resistance against the fungal pathogens Candida albicans. Details on our new metabolomics web app, omuShiny, are also there!

We found that anaerobiosis limits growth of Candida in the healthy gut, but disruption of anaerobiosis by antibiotics drives an intestinal bloom. Pharmacological restoration of anaerobiosis using drugs that stimulate epithelial oxygen consumption prevents this bloom.

I still refuse to use Pseudomonadota and Bacillota 😂. Enterobacteriaceae and Clostridia, my two favorites, get no love from the taxonomists.
