I’ve always been in love with Afghanistan. So as someone who spent nearly two weeks there visiting family, I made sure make full use of my experience there. Here are my thoughts 🧵

Lots of talk about Canada’s 1993 election recently, referencing the demise of the Progressive Conservatives, the top right-wing force in Canada. There were many factors contributing to their defeat, but none has a place in political mythology quite like the Chretien face ad. 🧵:

Voting intention by broadcaster Look how GB News is +very+ different to Sky, BBC and ITV If it’s promoting conservative thought, it appears to be doing so at the expense of the Conservative Party?

One of the strengths of the U.K. political system is that PMQs ensures that each “candidate” is stress-tested and match fit before election season. US politicians are so protected. Sure, there have been endless Biden memes - but no extended exposure in full public gaze until now

A truly historic day - the beginning of the Keir Starmer era - the end of 14 years of Conservative government. A privilege to have a front row seat. Now the final push with a three hour #PoliticsHub special

I’m now - sadly - old enough to remember Labour being finished forever, then the Tories being finished forever, then Labour being briefly finished forever before doing alright and then definitely being finished forever. So maybe, just maybe, the Tories aren’t finished forever.

This from the Lord Ashcroft post-election is probably the most important big picture analysis. Most Tory defectors will consider going back to the party - but many for not another 10 years. So decade in the wilderness but a remarkably short half-life for the Tory toxicity.
