Great talk by Dr. Asmeret Asefaw Berhe (she/her)👩🏽‍🔬🌍 at #ESA2024 about precipitation, erosion and SOM. Take home message: deep soils layers are temperature sensitive, drying of these layers makes the stable carbon pool available for microbes and over the whole profile soil porosity loss.

Wenqi Luo #ESA2024 overlayed fungal communties with climate- and land use change in US and found that landuse change leads to fungal div. loss except for pathogens and AMF but climate change alone increases fungal diversity. Is this a temporary effect?

Interesting morning @ESA2024. First attended the "Community assembly over time" learned about primary and secondary arrival effects in comm. assembly, then on equilibrium vs transience and about CSR theory on microbe comm. assembly and the role of microbial dormancy

Then I went to a great session in honor of Diana Wall about "Threats to soil biosiversity" kicked off by Elisabeth Bach. The huge loss of Diana is clearly really pressing on us, soil ecologists 😢. But the legacy she left us is fantastic!

Then @ESA2024 I went to a session on "Carbon markets for ecologists" where it becomes clear that both predictions and adequate mitigation strategies are still premature, but we will get there. Naturebase.org is a great tool and starting point to further develop this.

Happy to see #ESA2024 gives platform to a great Scientist Rebellion session "Grassroots activism for ecologists". I feel directly at home
