Just got round to the last episode of Ripley. Wow that opening sequence is so pretentious and silly, how did they get away with that?

First part of a very interesting response to this post, from a Columbia student (I'll publish the rest in the next Ruffian)

Late evening reading this week. 'Absolutely On Music' was a Ian Leslie recc some time ago IIRC but both are terrific so far: the revitalising conversation of enthusiasts about their bedrock obsessions.

Hungary-like fertility policies flatly don't work.

Hungary has dedicated major resources to this - no taxes for 3+ kids, debt forgiveness, major subsidies for homes. It's actually equivalent to ~5% of their GDP. The US military is 3.2%, so big spending.

Nothing happened.

Really good speech from Claire Coutinho MP on Net Zero. Essential argument: only way to do this is via market mechanisms, private sector innovation and creating products people actually want to use, not govt dictating everything about shape of the sector. gov.uk/government/speโ€ฆ
